Oh Joe - Chickenfoot - really? OK!
Mick on Oct 28th 2009
I must admit I stumbled upon this by visiting Joe Satriani’s Web Site and seeing the graphic for Chickenfoot. Huh - what the hey??? Chicken foot???
The link said CLiCK HERE to VISIT CHICKENFOOT.US and had the names Joe Satriani, Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony and Chad Smith… hmmm… them there are some Van Halen band names and Chad Smith turns out to be the drummer from Red Hot Chili Peppers. I love him!
WOW! This really did sound like a hot line up - so I clicked over andmust say I really digged the video they showed on the front page for”Sexy Little Thing” and then I watched the video for “Soap on a Rope”.
Sexy Little Thing was really good and Soap On A Rope was a bit CLICHE but I still liked it.
What’s cool is that this might be the first time Joe Satriani is actually in a band that has songs with vocals that sound good (sorry Joe - your singing never did the job!)
While this lineup could end up being just another dinosaur schlock rock flashback. the guys play off each other perfectly and the songs are really good.
They have a listening pary page so you can listen to more tunes from the band. I am now listening to Avenida Revolution. It’s good!
Now, the reason I like this band is primarily because Joe Satriani is playing guitar. With very few exceptions Joe can’t do wrong in my book so this had a good chance before I actually heard it.
I am pleasantly suprised by how much I like Sammy Hagar’s singing. Back in the day he was kind of a joke - people loved him/hated him and “I Can’t Drive 55″ never did have the impact other bands had at the time (Scorions and AC/DC, Judas Priest etc.). When Sammy did the Van Halen thing I think he suprised a lot of people and he got more respect although that stuff was a bit on the poppy side. I never bought any of those Van Halen albums and some of the stuff was on the radio too much.
As for Michael Anthony - he is a decent bass player and does fit well with this band.
Last but not least is Chad Smith from Red Hot Chilli Peppers. This guy is an awesome drummer! He makes this band rock! He and Joe make it real heavy in a good way!
I was always so-so on Red Hot Chili Peppers stuff. I liked a few songs but the cd’s I bought were mostly filled with disappointing songs. And they always sounded MUDDY to me. Mixed poorly (the Incubus syndrome of bad mixes). BUT I always loved the drumming. It was heavy AND tasty!
So - Chad rocks in this lineup.
If you like any of the players or just like good heavy rock - I suggest yopu go have a listen. Like me you just might be pleasantly suprised at how good Chickenfoot is!
